Hip-Hop has been around for arguably 50 years depending on who you talk to. Hip-Hop has taken on many identities and voices over those years. Youthful, Real, Gangsta, Loving, Joyous and Pain filled voices have been the narrative for many of those 50 years. As Hip-Hop matures there has been a new rise of projects that celebrate adult themes and making chill feel good music. “The Trilogy Of Dot” is one of those projects that leads Hip-Hop culture in finding a new sound in a way that celebrates maturity with good music.

This project can be defined as “Boom Bap Soul” music. Tre-Dot made sure when this project was made he gave the world his truth with honest 2 step vibes and many stories that give the picture of a man’s life weaved into his music. On this project we get a man’s heart, his struggle in life and his faith in himself and the path he walks in his journey in life.

This mixtape-styled project is a mix of Boom-Bap music, with soulful vibes that gives music what it has been missing and that is Honesty. Opening the listener with a tribute to the DJ’s, then detailing the artist’s growth in living life, finding a purpose in music and love. This project sets the listener up for the enjoyment of listening to life’s redemption of a soul that found his passion in expression. Then from the appreciation of life to reflecting on family and ending the project with acknowledging the blessings of life given to him while thanking God for the road being traveled sums up the realness of this project.

Hip-Hop has people that are growing up through its’ evolution from the sreet corner to the boardroom. Many people have lived their stories in many environments of this culture. “The Trilogy of Dot” is a project that when listened to will give the experienced ear the head nod of approval through the beats and truth being told. While the youthful ears may learn how to live and tell their story through music that comes from the soul and not from the desire to only be heard. Real music exist to inspire the growth of the listener and this project will do that for the ears that hear. Joy, Pain, Love and repentance outline our lives in truth and now we have a project that can travel with us as we walk our own journies through rhythm and life.

The results are in: And it’s Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy”, over Kanye West’s “Donda”, by a landslide…

After nearly a year of missed release dates and an on-again, off-again feud, arguably the 2 biggest artist’s in Hip-Hop finally dropped their long-awaited projects within a week of each other. Kanye released his highly anticipated “Donda”, album on Sunday, August 29th, and the following week Drake delivered his “Certified Lover Boy”, LP on Friday, September 3rd, to fans across the world.

In the time since these releases, fans and critics alike have debated which project was the BETTER album, however one fact has become clear: #CLB is the higher selling album, and it’s not even close.
“Donda”, was a monster release at the time, moving over 309,000 equivalent units in it’s first week, and more than 146,000 in it’s second, making it Ye’s 10th consecutive #1 Album, and (at the time) the highest selling album of 2021. However, those numbers pale in comparison to the success of “Certified Lover Boy”; which moved over 613,000 and 146,000 equivalent album units in it’s first two weeks respectively.

Indeed, Drizzy’s current dominance of the music landscape is so complete, that besides having the overall #1 Record in the country with “Way Too Sexy”, featuring Future & Young Thug, his latest album also occupies an additional 8 spots on the Billboard Top 10 Charts, and the ENTIRE Top 5; a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since the days of The Beatles.

So while Drake clearly bested Kanye in the overall sales competition, who actually WON the ‘Battle’ between the two Icons?? Check out the latest episode of “The Recap” w/ the GoodFellaz Show below, where the panel discusses the Winners and Losers from this epic musical showdown. Either way one thing is clear: the true winners were THE FANS, who have a lot of new music to listen to from two of the most influential artist of our generation. That’s a win-win for everybody.

Each month the good folks at GoodFellaz TV showcase the hottest DJ’s from across the globe. This months “DJ of the Month” is DJ Lady Star, representing New Jersey.

The beautiful DJ Lady Star has been killin’ the club scene in the Tri-State area for the last couple of years, developing an impressive following at her numerous weekly events. Ya boy Tommy Gunz recently sat down with her, where we talked about everything: Growing up in Jersey, duckin’ thirsty dudes,  the Lesbian party scene, NY vs. NJ club scene and much more. Check out our exclusive interview below.

Q: What’s good DJ Lady Star!! So I see you’ve been doing your thing in clubs all across the Tri-State area. Where are you from?

A: What’s up Tommy Gunz!!!  I’m from Jersey, I move around a lot these days doing gigs, but I was raised in Newark, NJ.

Q: Aiiiight, “Brick City”!! How long have you been a DJ for?

A: Hmmm, I’ve been DJ’ing for about 8 years now. Wow, time flies (laughs).

Q: How did you get in the game?

A: Before the DJ’ing, I started doing bottle service in the clubs, and I used watch how the crowd would react to the music that the DJ would play, and I kinda fell in love with that energy. My boy who used to DJ at this club I used to work at would let me play around with the turntables, and eventually I started practicing. Eventually I decided DJ’ing was something I wanted to do, and I got some equipment and started making mixes.

Q: That’s what’s up!! So how did you come up with your DJ Name, DJ Lady Star?

A: That’s a long story (laughs). Well originally I was gonna go by “DJ Mars”, because “Mars” was my nickname at the time. One day my boy gave me some advice, he said I should have a “Lady” somewhere in my name. So eventually I came up with “DJ Lady Star” because I like stars, (laughs). Nah but for real I really do, I even got a star tattoo, so you know it’s real (laughs).

Q: Well I think all the fellaz would agree that you’re pretty hot, you definitely have an exotic look. What’s your nationality??

A: Why thank you, actually I’m Portuguese.

Tommy Gunz: Really? That’s interesting, I swore you we’re Puerto Rican, definitely something Hispanic (laughs).

DJ Lady Star: Yeah, I get that a lot (laughs).

Q: Nowadays the art of DJ’ing has gone digital. Do you ever spin vinyl tho?

A:  Yes, here and there. I do practice with vinyl, although it’s not as convenient when doing club gigs. I like to practice with all my equipment whenever I get a chance. Turntables and controllers are my main thing.

Q: Speaking of going digital, gone are the days where Record Labels use to service DJ’s with all the new music. How do you get your music these days?

A: Well these days I usually get my music from different record pools, BPM Supreme and Mp3Pool are pretty good sites. Plus you guys (GoodFellazTV.com) always hook we up as well (laughs). Hey, sometimes if I really need a record and I can’t find it anywhere, I even hit YouTube occasionally. Whatever works (laughs).

Q: How do you know if a record is a winner?

A: Hmmm, I guess if it moves me. Sometimes the beat just catches me, there’s a certain vibe I get when I hear a hot song. When I hear something new that I think will be big, I’ll try it out at a small venue first and see the crowd reaction. If the crowd is feeling it, I know it’s a winner!

Q: What’s the Best Part of your Job?

A: My favorite part is making people happy, seeing their faces, seeing them having fun! As a DJ, there’s no better feeling then to see the crowd vibin’ to the music. I love when the people are having a good time. I’m not really a ‘people person’ in-person, but still, (laughs).

Q: Worst part of the job?

A: Ummm, I hate the hangovers, (laughs). I can spin a little tipsy, actually if anything I feel like my overall performance is a little better after having a drink. Fun fact, I’m actually a little shy on the mic at first until I have a drink in me. But after that, watch out! (laughs).

Q: What’s your favorite type of music that you like to play at your events?

A: I love Dembow music. I do a lot of Spanish and lesbian parties, so the joints I play tend to be up tempo, a lot of energy. I like a lot of club music; new stuff and the older club joints as well.

Q: Do you have a favorite type of crowd in particular?

A: The lesbian party vibe is dope, especial in New York. A lot of fun, a lot of energy and good vibes!

Q: Do you think it is a little more difficult being a female in the DJ game?

A: Uggghhh, yes, sometimes it can be. These guys trying to hit on me can be annoying at times (laughs).

Tommy Gunz: Awww man, what a rough life you must live, dudes always trying to holla at you (laughs).

DJ Lady Star: (Laughing). It can be sooooo annoying, like dude I’m trying to work, leave me alone (laughs).

Q: So guys trying to hit on you, got it. Is there any other difficulties you encounter?

A:  Well real talk, sometimes dudes feel like than can get over on me with the money, that’s probably the most annoying part. Especially these promoters. They’ll hit you with the ‘It was slow night” line, maybe because they think I look too nice and will fall for that. It can be a hassle sometimes.

Tommy Gunz: I feel you, you always have to be on top of your game when it comes to the money, especially in this business

DJ Lady Star: Facts! I don’t know, sometimes I feel like I too nice (laughs). But at the end of the day, don’t play with my money, don’t let my ‘nice-ness’ fool you, I don’t play (laughs).

Q: If you ask a lot of DJ’s, one of the most annoying things they have to deal with is when people ask for special requests. Do you take requests during your gigs?

A: Yooo that can be sooo annoying sometimes! I do take requests, if they give me money, (laughs). If I have it, and if they ask the right way, and the request isn’t crazy, I might throw it on when the vibe is right! I luv when I do play a request, and I can throw it in my mix and it still sounds dope!

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring DJ’s trying to get in the game?

A: I guess my advice to people who wanna be DJ’s would be make sure this is really what you want to do. Make sure you’re doing it for the love of the craft and not just for the money. Becoming a DJ doesn’t just happen overnight, you gotta put serious time and effort in to it.

Q: That’s Real talk. Do you have any advice for other females in particular who are trying to get in the game?

A: I guess make sure you get into the game for the right reason, do it for the luv of the craft. There are some dope female DJ’s out there who actually got skills, and then you got the ones who are just beautiful and they just play music. I mean, I’m not knocking their hustle, I’m just saying. Because if all you are is just a pretty face, you won’t last in this game but so long.

Q: Where do you prefer spinning, New York or New Jersey? Or does it matter?

A: (Sigh). Well I always have much luv for Jersey, but honestly New York is kind of where it’s at, money-wise. Spots in the city are usually willing to pay a DJ more, and with less hassle then in Jersey. Plus, that city-vibe is just different, you know.

Q: So how do you get your gigs, do you have a booking manager or do you do it yourself?

A: (Laughs). Well to keep it real I pretty much handle that myself for the moment. Basically I get my gigs through word-of-mouth and social media. I don’t have a manager, so I usually deal with the club owners and promoters myself, and book my own gigs. Normally I might be a little shy, but I gotta eat so I gotta make it happen, feel me?

Q: What’s your personal Favorite record out right now?

A: Hmmm, right now I gotta go with that Nicki Minaj “Megatron” joint. Song is fire!!!!!

Q: Hottest record in the Club right now is ________?

A:  Probably that Bad Bunny “Callaita” record. The response I get is always crazy when that comes on!

Q: Do you have a Favorite Artist?

A: I have a lot of artist I like, but if I had to pick one I guess I would say Drake.

Q: So right now you’re killin’ the club scene. So what’s next for you, what would your ‘Dream Gig’ be?

A: Hmmmm, well I guess my ‘Dream Gig’ would be getting on commercial radio, one of the big stations like Power 105 FM or Hot 97 FM. Or even a big Livestream gig, where people from across the world can check me out. To be able to move to a bigger platform and be able to reach more people would be dope!

Q: As a DJ, how do you continue to work on your craft?

A: Practice, practice, practice (laughs). I always try to practice on my mixing skills to perfect my craft. I also listen to the radio a lot, as well as Soundcloud; check out what’s hot, do my research. I like to listen to other DJ’s as well: their mixes, transitions, scratches, etc. It’s how I learn.

Q: You’ve spun at venues all across the Tri-State. How are New Jersey DJ’s different from New York DJ’s?

A: Hmmm, I don’t think they are any different honestly. I mean, the music may be different depending on where you’re spinning and the type of event, but otherwise it’s all about you and your own personal style really, that separates you from other DJ’s. Jersey & New York have similar vibes, music-wise.

Q: Where can everybody catch you spinning?

A: Everywhere (laughs). Just follow me on my Instagram page, I always post my flyers where I’ma be at.

Q: Where can everybody follow you at online?

A: You can check me out on IG, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, SoundCloud at @DJLadyStar.

Introducing Sean Felder:  Distributor for XS Energy Drinks

– Interview by Tommy Gunz (@DJTommyGunzNJ)

In our never-ending quest to celebrate the hustle of entrepreneurs from every industry, we bring you this month’s GoodFellaz TV “Industry Hustla of the Month”, Sean Felder of XS Energy Drinks. A independent distributor for one of the hottest new energy drinks in the world, Mr. Felder epitomizes the spirit and hustle of the next generation of young entrepreneurs in the game. Recently ya boy Tommy Gunz got a chance to sat down with Sean Felder, where we talked about everything! Check out the interview below.

Q: What’s good fam. So where are you from??

A: What’s good! You already know, New York City!

Q: So you’ve been working with XS Energy Drinks for a while now. Tell us how long have you been in the business?

A: I’ve been in the game for a while now. I was a former IBO since 2009 with Amway Global. Now I’m an Independent operator, just trying to take XS Energy Drinks to that next level!

Q: That’s what’s up! So what’s would you say the difference is between XS and other energy drinks like Redbull or Monster?

A: XS is just better for you, it has no sugar, and no caffeine. Redbull and Monster have a lot of sugar.

Q: How did you first start working with XS?

A: My ex-business partner Aaron Brown put me on to Amway Global, when we went to a seminar way back in 2009. I remember at the hotel we were staying at, some random guy was giving out XS Energy Drink samples. We tried it and liked it, so me and Aaron decide to go for it, to invest in the XS brand and in ourselves, and try to make it as Black entrepreneurs.

Q: Dope! So what other ventures are you currently working on?

A: Right now I’m focusing on getting more accounts, more interviews and going mainstream. I’m definitely trying to build up my Youtube video views as well.

Q: How important is Marketing & Promotion in the energy drink business?

A: Very important! Marketing and Promotion is vital in the energy drinks business! You must have a plan, because it’s a super-competitive industry. You have to be ready to take some losses, and you have to learn how to take chances as well.

Q: I hear that. So how has Social Media helped your craft?

A: Social media is huge. Being on Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook has tremendously helped my XS Brand. It’s one of the best ways to reach the people!

Q: What are the challenges you face in regards to getting XS Energy drinks poppin’ in today’s marketplace??

A: The challenges I faced with XS is getting potential clients and consumers to buy the product. And to convince customers that XS is the best drink in a crowded energy drink market.

Q: Is there a lot of money in the Energy Drink business?

A: Yes there is a lot of money in energy drink business, but you have to have a plan. You have to ask yourself: who are you targeting? You gotta know your market and your potential customers.

Q: What is your Advice to other people trying to start and grow their own business?

A: My advice to people starting their own business is to have a plan. You also have to have a strong team. And you have to be able to work within a budget. Budgeting is sooooo important. Expect some setbacks, but trust the process.

Q: So let’s talk music. Who are some of your favorite artists?

A: I’m more old school, so my top 5 rappers would be: 5. LL Cool J, 4. Nas, 3. Ice Cube, 2. Rakim, 1. KRS ONE.

Q: What New Albums are currently in your Playlist?

A: I don’t really have a playlist, but I can say Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, and Bruno Mars all are in steady rotation.

Q: The best show on television is _________ ??

A: To me, the best show on TV today is Empire. I like it because it shows you how cut-throat music industry can be. My boy Xzibit played his role well too I gotta say!

Q: You work with a lot of up-and-coming Models. What is your advice to females trying to get into the modeling game?

A: To all my upcoming models, my advice would be to be confident, humble, understand the power of your sex appeal, and be able to handle constructive criticism. And don’t expect a lot of money when you first start out, the big shots will laugh at you. Focus on building your brand first, you have to get your portfolio photos poppin’ first before mainstream people will reach out to you on social media. Models should take my advice to heart.

Q: Is XS a good drink to mix with alcoholic beverages (a la Redbull)??

A: Of course! XS is good to mix with alcoholic beverages. My personal favorite mix is the ‘Cirtic Fruit’ flavor with Barcardi. Tastes excellent!

Q: So what’s the Best Part of your Job?

A: The best part of my job is just the freedom of being a enterprenuer. Being a distributor entails a lot of traveling, and meeting people worldwide promoting the drink. I enjoy proving the critics wrong, and showing the world that a Black man with sense can help Corporate America get energy drinks like XS into the inner- cities. The Hip-Hop world shows me and XS a lot of love!

Q: What’s the Worst Part of the Job?

A: (Sighs) The Bad part is dealing with assholes, racist clowns, shady scams promoters, and models who try to take advantage of you. I was actually on People’s Court in 2017, I had to sue a shady, ratchet model who tried to scam me out of 100k by violating her XS contract. You can even look it up online, the Case was called ‘Model Mayhem’ (Sean Felder vs Honey Goddess). You can check it out on YouTube, it was hilarious (laughs).

Q: Who’s a better artist at this moment, Kanye West or Childish Gambino/Donald Glover?

A: Hmmm, I gotta go with Kanye West. He’s out of line at times, but you can’t question his track records as an artist. I still got his 1st album, “College Dropout” in rotation.

Q: So what’s next for you? What other projects are you currently working on?

A: We got a lot of stuff in the works. I’m on the front cover of the next issue of “Words Of Wisdom” magazine. Got some photo-shoots with some models in Atlanta, GA this month. More radio shows promoting XS, a possible sponsor with a NY Giants sports show. Waiting for contract details. Talking to Clear Channel in regards to some advertisement, possibly putting XS Drinks on billboards; just waiting on the details.

Q: Where can people find XS energy drinks? Are they in most stores? Online?

A: XS is slowly making its way into the local NYC stores. But were poppin in the local stores in the south like Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. It’s a slow grind, there’s a lot of politics involved, but we’re getting there. For anybody establishment who wants to order cases of XS, you can call 1-800-235-6500 to order what you need. Use my name Sean Felder, distributor, and they will hook you up. You can use debit or credit card to order. 12 cans comes in a case. Prices may vary.

Q: Where can people find out more about XS Energy drinks?

A: Just Google us, all the information you need about XS Energy Drinks is online.

Q: Do you have any Shout-outs before we go?

A: Of course! Shout-out to my XS models worldwide, and all our fans on social media. Also special shout-out to Unsyned Heatt DVD, all the magazines and radio shows who support XS. Also my PR extraordinaire Lorriane Bridgette for helping me with all the events involving XS.

Recently the GoodFellaz attended the Snoop Dogg x Elliott Wilson “CRWN” interview in NYC, where the two legends spoke on a variety of topics in celebration of the new Snoop album “Coolaid”. Held at the Highline Ballroom in Manhattan, the two O.G.’s talked about everything: Snoop’s career, his days with Deathrow Records, politics, working with Wiz Khalifa, and the inspiration behind his latest LP (hint hint, Beyonce’s “Lemonaid”).

Elliott Wilson, the former editor-in-chief of XXL and founder of the popular website RapRadar, held nothing back; delving into personal subject including Snoop’s murder case from the late 90’s, the last days of Deathrow, the beef with Bad Boy records, his relationship with Suge Knight, and even his opinion on the Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump Presidential elections. However the LBC rapper was as cool as ever, answering each question in-depth and sprinkling each response with his unique sense of humor.

case-heavens-door-cover-artRecently the GoodFellaz attended the listening session for R&B singer Case and his upcoming album “Heaven’s Doors”. Held at Engine Room Studios in NYC, a select crowd of tastemakers were invited to preview tracks from his latest project, which is set to drop everywhere March 31st on eOne Music.

While poppin’ bottles of Bel Air Rose with the crowd, Case played several tracks off his newest LP, and we have to say: we were very impressed with what we heard. The sound of his new music was vintage R&B, full of catchy hooks and infectious melodies.

When speaking to the audience about the inspiration behind his new music, Case had this to say:

I felt like the love was missing from R&B- it’s been missing from ‘Black Music’ period- and I wanted to make a classic, old-school R&B song.”

If you are a true fan of love-inspired ballads and classic R&B, the GoodFellaz highly recommend you pick up the new album from Case “Heaven’s Door”, which will be available in stores March 31st. You can pre-order the new LP here.
