Recently FOX hosted an advance screening of the new sitcom “REL” in Harlem, NY, where stars Lil Rel Howery (aka the T.S.A. dude from the movie “Get Out”) and Jessica “Jess Hilarious” Moore were on hand to greet the hundreds of guests that arrived at AMC Magic Johnson Theater to preview the highly-anticipated show. And of course the GoodFellaz were in the building to check it out!

Podcaster and social media influencer Kid Fury served as the event host and moderated a hilarious Q&A with Rel and Jess after the screening. Also in attendance was “REL” co-creator and executive producer Jerrod Carmichael, actress Tiffany Haddish, “The Bobby Brown Story” star Woody McClain, Roc Nation exec Lenny Santiago, “Power” actress Shannon Thornton, BET’s “Grand Hustle” star Krystal Garner, and recording artist Azia.

And we have to say, “Rel” is very funny! The vibe of the show reminded us of classic comedies including “Martin”, “The Wayans Brothers” and even “Seinfeld”. Without spoiling the episode, we can say that Lil Rel was especially  hilarious when he played a different character midway through the show a la Martin Lawrence. And Sinbad, who plays Rel’s father in the show, was a scene stealer as well, providing some of the funniest lines of the episode. The GoodFellaz definitely recommend this show to all comedy fans!

A special preview of “Rel” premieres Sunday, September 9 at 8/7c (after NFL on FOX). The regular season premieres Sunday, September 30 at 9:30pm on FOX. Shoutout to the One35 Agency and FOX for the invite!

“First Thoughts”: Dave Chappelle ft. Chance the Rapper.

First things first: Man…what a great show. It was my first time seeing Dave Chappelle live and yes, dude is maaaaad funny, lol. There were surprise cameos from Hannibal Buress, John Mayer, and my personal favorite Jon Stewart; that was a huge plus! Plus, there was an amazing performance by Chance the Rapper.

THE SHOW

Chance is just a different kind of guy. God definitely has his hand on that kid in some way. What he does with that is beyond my control, but his live-show was almost like a church service. I watched whole sections of the audience, hands raised, chanting “I’m gonna praise him”, “Ultralight beam” and “How great is God”. Yes, some people were actually praising during a rap/comedy show. Yeah he’s not perfect and yes he cursed a few times during the show, but his presence on that stage reminded me a lot of Kirk Franklin when he first came out…guess we’ll see what happens with him. But dude is very talented.

SURPRISE GUESTS

As far as the surprise guests, all I have to say is Jon Stewart is the man, lol. Seeing him live makes me miss his version of the “Daily Show”, but I’m a Trevor Noah fan also. He’s just funny and very truthful in his approach to current events.

Hannibal Buress is an acquired taste lol..either you like him and think he’s hilarious in a dry-humor-kinda-way, or you’re not really feeling him, lol…I like him though. He did his thing.

THE MAIN EVENT

Dave Chappelle is just fearless and real…he’s just a legend, plain and simple. Without giving anything away, Dave’s routine touched on topics including Donald Trump (of course, lol), the Charlottesville protests, getting booed in Cleveland, transgenders in the military, Caitlyn Jenner posing nude in Sports Illustrated, and Morgan Freeman-as-his-Penis. Enough said, lol

THE CONS

If there were any complaints, it would be that even the cheapest of tickets ran you close to $200. And that was for the upper balcony seats. Also a word of advice, leave your phone/camera in the car, or you will have to check them in with security, who will lock them in a special pouch that only they can open at the end of the show. I kid you not. But other than that it was a great show, well worth the cost of the ticket!

WORDS OF WISDOM

Naturally as my life goes, me and Tommy Gunz got stranded in New York, lol (Long story). A friendly word of advice; if you’re planning to go to any of his NYC shows and you decide to park in a parking garage, do yourself a favor and check to make sure the spot stay open 24-hours. The show ends around 11:30 PM, and these NYC parking garages DO NOT CARE if you can’t get your car until the next morning. You’re welcome, lol.

THE VERDICT

Overall it was a great night. Very funny, very entertaining. If you get a chance to go, check it out. Not a bad seat in the house so don’t be weary of the higher level cheaper tickets…you see everything. If you are into comedy, this is a ‘must see’ show!

Jay-Z is back with his new album “4:44”, and his timing couldn’t be better!

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first heard that Jay was dropping a new album. I mean granted we’re talking about one of the greatest, if not THE Greatest, artist in the history of Hip-Hop. An artist who, over the course of 2 decades has defined and then redefined Hip-Hop music. Hov probably has more classic albums then many artists today have had albums, period! From “Reasonable Doubt” to “The Blueprint” to “The Black Album”, Jay-Z has arguably had more impact on the culture, and music as a whole, than any other rapper ever.

Yet it’s now 2017. The Hip-Hop climate is waaaaay different now than it was 1996, or even 2006. We live in an era where “mumble rap” is a thing, where ‘turn-up’, auto-tune, and ‘swag’ has replaced ‘skills’, lyrics, and the art of being an emcee. The days of crafting classic albums have taken a backseat to iTunes singles and streaming music. Most artists in this current era don’t make it past their sophomore LP, at the most.

And here we have Jay-Z, with his 13th solo album, which he dropped exclusively through his Tidal streaming service, partnered with Sprint. That last sentence alone should indicate just how far music has come since the “Reasonable Doubt” days. You know, back when they used to release CD’s and Cassette tapes that anybody could buy, anywhere, at any time.

The problem with being a legendary artist, as well as a legendary businessman (Hey, he’s almost a Billionaire), not to mention the husband of one of the most famous entertainers on the planet Beyonce, is that sometimes your newer accomplishment can almost get lost in the mix. Or even worse, all that success might dull the passion for artistry, causing many super-stars to just ‘phone it in’ after a while, putting out product that’s less-than stellar (Think “Magna Carta Holy Grail”).

This is where Jay-Z finds himself in 2017. On the heels of his last LP, his aforementioned 2013 release “Magna Carter Holy Grail”, which- let’s face facts- wasn’t that good at all. Sure it had a few radio singles, and sure it was probably better than most other Hip-Hop albums that came out around that time (not that that is saying very much these days, lol), but it was the definition of “less than stellar”. It was very forgettable. But it was Jay-Z, so we had to appreciate it because, well he’s Jay-Z.

That very sentiment was in the back of my mind as I first downloaded “4:44” (And not via Tidal or Sprint either, so sue me, lol). However, after a few listens on my lap-top and smartphone over the course of the day (After all, we are in the future, lol), I have to say: it’s pretty damn good! As a matter of fact, I’ll go even one step further and say Jay-Z’s new album is exactly what we need!

But the question is, who is “We” these days? I myself was a teenager when Jigga first dropped “Reasonable Doubt”. I still remember the thrill of hearing him and the Notorious BIG going back-to-back with straight bars on “Brooklyn Finest”, or the soulfulness of Mary J. Blige voice on “Can’t Knock The Hustle”. Which makes me kind of, ummm, old I guess, lol. At least by today’s Hip-Hop standards.

The question is, is ‘Me’ and ‘We’ the same thing in 2017? I mean, in today’s Hip-Hop, there are actually rappers who wear dresses and women’s clothing (I still can’t get over that, smh). In this era, some of the biggest hits on the radio currently are by artists who have been labeled as “mumble-rap”. Yes, there is actually a genre of Hip-Hop called “mumble rap” in 2017, lol. Don’t worry, I’m also having a hard time understanding that. In this era, where does an artist like Jay-Z even fit in anymore, besides being the ‘OG’ and Businessman that today’s youth look up too?

This is why “4:44” is such a refreshing, and important album. The 10 song project, produced exclusively by long-time collaborator No I.D., ushers in possibly a new genre: Grown-Folks Hip Hop. The beats are soulful, reminiscent of his “Blueprint” days, yet the sound is neither stale nor just a carbon-copy of his early work. It’s actually a breathe of fresh air in a radio soundscape dominated by ‘Trap Beats’ and Auto-tune hooks. There are no forced collaborations with the current who’s-who of rap; instead Jay keeps the features to a minimum, with guest appearances by Frank Ocean, Beyonce, The Dream, Damian Marley, and even his mother Gloria Carter. You know, features that actually make sense.

What’s really impressive about the new album though is this may be Mr. Sean Carter’s most personal work to date. For somebody who has done so much in his career, who has been in the news as much as he has over the last couple of years, it’s dope to actually hear about his life from his point-of-view, instead of just the generic ‘I’m-Rich-And-Famous’ bars sprinkled with a few product-placements here and there. He speaks on his relationship with Beyonce, his alleged infidelity, ‘beef’ with long-time friend Kanye West, his venture with Tidal, among many subjects. Hey, he even reveals that his mother is a lesbian on one of the standout tracks “Smile”, where she recites a few lines of poetry at the end of the song. That’s something that I didn’t know. I don’t think anybody know that, unless you were in Hov’s inner-circle. That’s what I call personal.

Now, let’s keep it 100%, this is NOT Jigga best body of work. Often times, the difficulty in being a ‘legend’ is that it’s hard to top your greatest feats. Songs like “Moonlight”, which features a classic Fugees sample, is a straight filler track; the beat itself sounds uninspiring. Even the intro record “Kill Jay-Z”, although not bad, lacks that epic feel fans are used to from a Jay-Z album. Hova’s flow also seems to lack energy at certain points, almost as if he’s trying to keep his voice down in the booth so he doesn’t wake Blue Ivy up in the next room, lol. Gone is the ‘gutta’ Jay, replaced instead by a calmer, gentler S. Carter. Also missing from the new project are those sure-fire radio hits that were once a pre-requisite for a Jay-Z album. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing per se, but it is noticeable.

But while it may not be his best album, it’s not his worst album either (That distinction goes to #MCHG in my opinion). Tracks like “The Story of OJ”, “Smile”, “Caught Their Eyes” & the tittle track “4:44” are DOPE!!! It’s the type of album you have to listen to a few times to really feel it. It’s a Good Album, and more importantly, it’s a Important album for the climate of Hip-Hop.

Why is it important then, if it’s not his best work? It might not be another “Blueprint”, but it might be THE blueprint for- yes I’m running with the phrase, lol- Grown Folks Hip Hop!

Imagine, a hot song, with some actual content in the mix. For every verse about flossin’ and Ace of Spades, there’s also a line like:

Generational wealth/ that’s the key,”

from Jay’s song “Legacy”, or a verse like this:

Financial freedom my only hope
Fuck livin’ rich and dyin’ broke
I bought some artwork for 1 million
2 years later, that shit worth 2 million
Few years later, that shit worth 8 million
I can’t wait to give this shit to my children
Y’all think it’s bougie, I’m like, it’s fine
But I’m tryin’ to give you a million dollars worth of game for $9.99,”

from one of the standout songs on the album “The Story of O.J.”, which is also accompanied by a dope video- you guessed it- exclusively on Tidal, lol.

Maybe this could be the start of a new sound for Rap. More content. More reality. Or if not a start, then a shift in the direction of the culture. In the midst of the Trap & Mumble-Rap onslaught that has gripped the radio of late, newer artists such as Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Chance the Rapper and Drake have made careers off of content, both socially and personally.

I guess only time will tell. In the meantime, if you haven’t already, make sure you check out that new “4:44” album. Not because it’s Jay-Z and you’re ‘supposed to’, but because it’s good music, and why wouldn’t you. Do it for the culture!

The Migos currently hold the crown with the #1 song in the country (“Bad & Bougie”), so naming their album “Culture” makes a lot of sense. On Friday, January 27th , it was time to see if they could translate that into a performance that met the GoodFellaz standard! Held at the world-famous Highline Ballroom in NYC, The Migos had a chance to make sure that the album wasn’t the only thing talked about.

The ATL-trio had already been making some major waves with massive shows in Nigeria and of course Atlanta, with video clips that looked like near-riots as opposed to a concert. And this show definitely lived up to expectations; it was  honestly an unforgettable experience where the term “concert” couldn’t even accurately define the madness you were stepping into. Long gone were the days of ‘head-knocking’ and the ‘lean back’; the new era of hip-hop moshpits, dance-trends, and leaving the show feeling like you just went to the gym was here, and it was time to see if The Migos could do the same in the ‘Mecca of Hip Hop’ aka New York City.

Perhaps it was the joint live-streamed venture with Tidal, but The Migos were surprisingly on-time for a hip-hop concert; the crowd was kept waiting only a little under an hour for the madness to begin. Before I get into specifics, allow me to mention that the GoodFellaz crew have been to some of the most turnt-up shows EVER; including legendary events like Tyler the Creator’s insane NYC show and Kanye’s “Saint Pablo Tour” concert, where the entire show was pretty much one big mosh-pit. However even we were impressed by The Migos show that night. Inside the much smaller Highline Ballroom venue, the crowd stood true fans, and EVERY SINGLE ONE was ready to leave ‘blood on the floor’ in the name of the party. We don’t just say that as just empty rhetoric either, I literally witnessed someone catch an elbow straight to the nose during “Kelly Price”, a new track off their album featuring  Travis Scott.

When you step into the building for ANY Migos show, you make an immediate decision: Step to the back and watch from the wall, or jump right into the action. From the literal intro, a sh*tstorm of drastic proportions hits you from every angle. Every elbow, every fist, everybody that can be thrown into you will. DO NOT GET IN YOUR FEELINGS. This is what a Migos show is about. The crowd at times even drowned-out The Migos themselves. THIS IS WHAT YOU SIGN UP FOR, and quite frankly, it’s something everyone should witness. It’s a high-octane, insane energy, that can literally shake buildings.

Zaytoven came out early at the NYC, adding to the fun by providing live keys and a soundtrack to the crowd that begged for more and more. I have always said that for a performance to be truly euphoric, a special guest was needed. While Zaytoven was not quite what I expected, it was absolutely one we didn’t know we needed; he kept the crowd hype until the main event.

And once The Migos hit the stage, the insanity truly began! When it comes to a good show pacing is important, because these fans DO NOT SLOW DOWN. From the Intro, to new tracks like “Kelly Price” and  “T-Shirt”, and of course their smash hit “Bad and Bougie”, the pace only picked up, the jumps got higher, and the ‘bows got stronger. If it sounds like a mob scene, it’s simply because it is. It’s a riot with a soundtrack. It’s an experience that you should absolutely take a moment to experience in your lifetime, or at least witness from the back wall.

If you’re gonna do a concert with a group this lit, Highline Ballroom’s 700-person venue is perfect to keep the action all around you like a Hype 3D movie. All-in-all, The Migos “Culture” Tour is on its way to a city near you, and with the all the crazy going on in 2017, nothing is more upbeat than a Migos party.

Want to see just how ‘lit’ a Migos show can get?? Check out classic performance from The Migos in NYC below, courtesy of the good folks at GoodFellaz TV!

Ain’t no such thing as half-way cooks…. lol

Recently the GoodFellaz attended the Prodigy “Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Cookbook” book-signing event in Brooklyn, NY. Held at the popular Sweet Chick soulfood restaurant in the Williamsburg section of BK, those in attendance were not only able to purchase the new book from the legendary Mobb Deep lyricist, but were actually able to sample several dishes inspired by his cookbook as well.

Co-written by Prodigy & critically-acclaimed  journalist Kathy Iandoli“Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Cookbook” not only contains some truly unique recipes, but it also offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of prison life- especially when it comes to health and nutrition.

In the book introduction, Prodigy has this to say regarding his latest literary offering:

This book won’t make you a better cook, but it might make you a better person, Because in a world where prisoners are treated like animals, we made our experiences there feel more human by how we prepared our food.

Check out photos from the event, along with a few of our favorite recipes below; and of course purchase the book as well. And remember where you heard about this first: GoodFellaz TV.

ABOUT THIS BOOK:

Meals are perhaps the most important aspect of prison life. They keep inmates alive, both physically and emotionally, as mess halls and common areas provide a level of social interaction in an otherwise lonely situation. Albert “Prodigy” Johnson served three and a half years in prison, and during that time his focus was on his health—an almost impossible feat behind bars, where many inmates often enter the prison system healthy, but leave with diabetes and hypertension. “Commissary Kitchen” provides a deeper perspective of what it’s like to consume meals in prison. While recipes are provided, Prodigy and co-writer Kathy Iandoli also tell various anecdotes about situations in prison involving food. Meal prep in prison is very limited, so while this work appeals to anyone who has served time or is curious about prison life, it also speaks to those who prepare food with limited access to various cooking luxuries (such as college students in dorms). While the work is informational, above all it humanizes the prison experience in a way that has never been done before.

Albert “Prodigy” Johnson is a multi-platinum recording artist and member of the legendary hip-hop duo Mobb Deep. In 2006, Prodigy was arrested for gun possession and served a three-year prison term. In 2011, he released his first memoir, the critically-acclaimed “My Infamous Life”. Since then, Prodigy has continued to release both solo projects and albums through Mobb Deep, touring worldwide. When he isn’t touring, Prodigy is traveling the United States, lecturing at venues like M.I.T. about the prison system and offering insight on changing the quality of inmates’ lives.

Kathy Iandoli is a critically-acclaimed journalist and author. Her work has appeared in publications such as Pitchfork, VICE, Maxim, Cosmopolitan, the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and many others.

OUR FAVORITE RECIPES

P’s Prison Sangria

Ingredients:
– Apples
– Oranges
– Mixed fruit cups
– Bread
– Ketchup
– Sugar

Directions: While much has been written about making hooch in jail over the years, P’s fine-tuned his recipe once he was released, unwilling to risk adding any more time to his sentence. Once you have your fruits, the rapper suggests putting it in a sealable bag, “mashing it together until it looks fucking disgusting,” and then letting it sit in a bowl of boiling, microwaved water. Finally, wrap the bag in a t-shirt and find a place to stash it.

Prodigy’s tip: “After a few days, the bag should start blowing up, which means gas in there and it’s becoming liquor. Open the bag a little and add some ketchup and a ton of sugar.”

WHITE BAR

P’s Don’t Try This At Home Prison Surprise

Ingredients:
– Ramen noodles
– Doritos (you could also substitute with Cheez-Its or sliced cheese)
– Jack Mack (tuna works fine too)
– Hot sauce

Directions: Though Chef Boyar-P is decidedly anti-ramen (too much sodium), prison surprise is one of the more legendary jail dishes around, and the rapper decided to bless us with a recipe all the same. Basically, the Doritos make a kind of cheese sauce once they’re crushed up and mixed in with the boiling noodles. The Jack Mack—or mackerel in a can—is rinsed off and placed on top of the noodles.

Prodigy’s tip: “Good luck, yo.”

So “Suicide Squad” sucked!!!! lol…. I don’t think there is any other way to put it. And this is coming from a comic book fan.

To be honest, I had heard some of the critics reviews previously, but I was surprised just how bad it really was. Now had I actually paid money to see it, I would have been extremely disappointed.

Squad2-970x545Granted it wasn’t all bad, I did like Harley Quinn’s character, Margot Robbie pretty much nailed the role with just the right amount of sexiness-meets-craziness. She was probably the best part of the entire film. Will Smith also did a good job portraying Deadshot, and although he tends to play as himself in the majority of his movies, he did add some much needed personality to the role. And hey, I even thought Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker was pretty good actually, despite the inevitable comparisons to Heath Ledgers take on the character….. But the rest of the movie SUCKED!

The plot was sketchy at best; are they saving the city from a supernatural menace, or is it a rescue mission? And during the course of the film when everything goes wrong and they have the chance to escape, is it really plausible that they would stay and fight for the very people who were blackmailing them into the mission in the first place? And let’s not forget, since when did the former psychiatrist-turned-Joker’s girlfriend become so adept with a sword that she is able to slice out the heart of a supernatural demon with one stroke? Did they teach that in medical school? lol

Joker+Suicide+SquadThe acting other than Harley/Joker/Deadshot was pretty bad all around, the main villain Enchantress was very suspect, and Killa Croc’s character was almost painful to watch (his ‘blaxploitation-like’ lines we’re horrible, and one particular joke about BET was cringe-worthy, lol). And lets not forget Captain Boomerang– the name alone should tell you how bad his character was, lol

Unless you’re a die-hard DC fan, do yourself a favor and save you money until it hits cable. I think director David Ayer was going for a “Guardians of the Galaxy” vibe with the soundtrack and the witty banter, but he ended up making something more reminiscent of a “Ghostbusters-meets-Hancock-meets-Howard the Duck” type film instead, lol..

Although I wouldn’t mind seeing more of the Joker & Harley Quinn in a future Batman solo movie (he does make an appearance as well as the Flash), I left the theater underwhelmed by this movie. Hey, it will probably make a lot of money in it’s first 2 weeks in theaters due to the hype, before people realize just how bad it really is. But just because it makes money doesn’t make it a good film.

If you do decide to see it, stay for the mid-credits scene, which kinda sets up for a new Batman and/or Justice League flicks…

Let’s take it back to the old school, let’s take it to Union Square!”

I must have heard that Greg Nice chant echo and ring at LEAST 5 times last Saturday night, when Adam Torres Concerts “done did it again” as we say, and turned out the crowd for another old school performance.

12803027_10154013619406151_2456185453368651860_nThe ‘Big Hits’ Throwback Festival, held at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, was the JMN, CrashGAWDS and GoodFellaz TV ‘Event of the Week’. And even though the median age had to be in the mid-to-upper 40’s, our crew was in the building, drinks in hand, and the beats still hit as hard in 2016 as they did when all of these records were charting.

However, this wasn’t just your ordinary ‘old school’ hip hop concert. Adam Torres Concerts was not afraid, as many are, to make the lineup diverse, in fear of losing crowd.

No, this concert took it to the Mid-to-Late 80’s right off the bat, to the hot and sweaty summers in the Bronx and Manhattan, to the blocks that had just as many Puerto Rican flags as they did American ones. Freestyle Music, the likes of which ATC has had a hand in singlehandedly reviving, (“Freestyle Extravaganza” has sold out arenas across the country), belted out the speakers strong, with Stevie B, Lisa Lisa, and even Rockell performed. Don’t know any of these names? Google “Take U Home” by Wale and Meek Mill (pre-beef of course), and then listen to Lisa Lisa “I Wonder If I Take You Home”. I’m just trying to put you on!

**CrashGAWD Rating: 3 out of 5 hacks– This genre you have to semi-know to truly enjoy **

Shaggy

Reggae had its superstars shine strong as well, as both Shaggy and Kevin Lyttle hit the stage. I never seen older women move the way they did that night when “Tempted to Touch” came on, but believe me, they still got it. Also, is Shaggy even really considered old school? “I Need Your Love” released only just last year to commercial and critical acclaim, which ironically, this older crowd didn’t seem to really know. Unfortunately for him, he chose to end the set with that one.

**CrashGAWD Rating 5 out of 5 hacks–you’re def under a rock if you don’t know either of their hits. Which means they are classics. Which means why the hell wouldn’t you go?!?!”

12932596_10153557569286687_1517259013010958832_nUnfortunately, I do HAVE to address this. Bobby. Brown. I don’t think I was the only there that was really watching his performance instead of at the bar just to see if he still had it. I should have went to the bar. Bobby Brown, as legendary as he is, was just a sad performance. His background dancers sang better than he did. They move better as well, although I at least expected that one. I don’t want to say cocaine is a hell of a drug, but…um…

**CrashGAWD Rating 1 out of 5 hacks –Not worth seeing in concert solo. As part of a collective performance, perfect time for a bathroom break**

JARULEBut, never fear, Hip Hop, per usual saved the day! Naughty by Nature and Ja Rule hit the stage and IMMEDIATELY lit the crowd back up. My only qualm with Ja is you GOTTA do the street stuff too! He essentially performed every hit he had with Ashanti and DASIT!?!

I expected a bit better. As far as Naughty by Nature, they are a rare breed of rappers who can ACTUALLY perform. It’s not just about their songs or set, they know how to do crowd interludes, and show love to OTHER hits as well. Come up rappers reading this, learn from Naughty….

**CrashGAWD Rating 4 out of 5 hacks—Could have easily been a 5 if Ja was diverse in his set list, but I’m sure if it was just him, he would fully deliver. Naughty always delivers.**

12321405_1146888678685017_3516336758901571779_n

And finally there they were, the immensely rare TLC. Between the kickstarter drama, and the fact that we ALL miss Left Eye, they don’t really perform like that anymore, so this felt special. Better yet, they could still move! It truly became an R&B concert as in the stage was always moving. Choreographed dance moves, and the ladies played off each other perfectly as hype men. This is a HARD act to catch, so when they are in town, don’t miss this!!

**CrashGAWD Rating 4 out of 5 hacks—Just because we really miss Lisa**

Overall Show Performance: 7 out of 10 Hacks- Could have been an 8, but damn Bobby! It was just too much of a sore moment for myself and I’m sure a LOT of other attendees by the looks.

Set List Rating: 6 out of 10 Hacks- A lot of good performance sets. However some Performances felt rushed. We got verses in some cases instead of songs.

Venue Rating: 6 out of 10 Hacks- The Prudential Center sucks on Wifi, other than that, decent acoustics.

Surprises Rating: 1 out of 10 Hacks- The one song where I was SURE I was getting something extra was “New York” with Ja Rule, I was positive that either Fat Joe or Jadakiss was going to come out and shock the crowd. But nothing.

Worth Your Wallet? 8 out of 10 Hacks- Adam Torres Concerts is pretty dope at what they do. I would say yes, but for an old school show like this, you don’t need front row. Especially not for Bobby Brown.

Company Rating: 7 out of 10 Hacks- Adam Torres Concerts does some HUGE old school joints. If that’s your wave, keep an eye out for them.

My thoughts on “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (Spoiler free)

Any good trilogy has to have a starting point, something to establish the universe and raise expectations for the next story. A setup jab to the knockout punch. I feel like this basic understanding of the format will allow you to go into this movie with realistic expectations.

“Batman v Superman” is definitely the ‘Dawn’ of Justice, the first light of what’s to come and it does a good job in establishing the DC Comics Cinematic Universe and its characters, in my opinion.

The Good:

This movie is all about themes and symbolism. The soundtrack is well done and sets an epic tone to this film, it helps to separate the characters and their motivations quite well and guides the mood of the film.

1010828_10154218523666844_7084879516297212229_nCavil plays the conflicted hero juggling the desire to live a normal life and at the same time being this god-like hero who wants to help, but can’t understand the conflicting emotions his presence inspires in people. He does the right thing but people suffer and are angry. The duality of humanity is difficult for him.

Affleck is a savage, lol…. He owns this role as the weathered hero who’s come to a place of anger and bitterness in life and sees the other side of what Superman represents. Batman feels helpless compared to Superman and responds with focused desire to protect the world from what he could become. Affleck’s Batman is very much the vigilante who does what is needed to get the job done. He’s definitely more of a Punisher-type personality.

Gadot does what she’s supposed to. Be a spark, a flash, a cheering point to raise the adrenaline for the next film. She’ll do well as Wonder Woman.

Eisenberg was a good choice for Luther, but I feel his story and deep motivations get a little lost in the movie. But his Luther is definitely a brilliant maniac

The graphics are awe inspiring and the action scenes fall right into Snyders’ expertise. You won’t be disappointed there. The fight between Batman and Superman is 😱

untitled

The Bad:

Some of the scenes are long winded, meaning the point of the scenes could be achieved just as well if the scene was 5-10 seconds shorter.

Some scenes felt forced or out of place with what was going on in the overall story. Even though they’re necessary to setup the future.

I would have loved one more fighting scene, but I’m being greedy, lol

Doomsday-750x400

The Ugly:

Ehhhhh, Doomsday was decent. Just felt he was a little typical

And the Verdict is…… ???

This a really good movie. I’m VERY interested in the directors cut now. There are some surprises in there that i’m not going to spoil for anyone. Batman hands-down steals the movie and fan-boys are gonna have a heart attack over that fight, lol

The Score:

4 1/2 out of 5 Stars

I believe that (And I speak candidly for most Hip Hop Fans, lol), that when you think Hip Hop, National Public Radio (NPR) isn’t the immediate medium that comes to mind. In fact, if it even comes to mind at all, it probably would be much further down the list of Urban music staples such as Hot 97, Video Music Box, or even newcomers such as Revolt TV. Therefore, you can imagine our surprise when we looked at the contact information for a private Schoolboy Q show at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC, we were pleasantly surprised with what we saw. NPR is stepping out into our world, and they came ready to not open doors, but break them down altogether.

SchoolBoy Q NPR ShowUtilizing some of the biggest names in Urban Music right now, the TDE family is currently set to launch a new dynasty in Hip Hop. With the MAJOR success of Kendrick Lamar (Grammy-wins aside), fellow label-mate Schoolboy Q’s “Oxymoron” album, sets to follow that same heat in less than 24 hours. Although myself and other industry personnel agree that “Oxymoron” cannot match the coveted “Good Kid Maaad City” as far as first week sales (242,122), it has a unique chance to do something that “G.K.M.C.” did not: place at #1 in its first week. The #1 title that Kendrick could have had was simply too little for mainstream powerhouse Taylor Swift with her “RED” album.

The buzz is strong for “Oxymoron”, and NPR successfully elevated that to the next level. With NPR Music launching in 2007, and later, NPR’s “Microphone Check” (it’s ‘all Hip Hop’ show), the broadcast company was able to pack the house with listeners and new fans that it never had before this last decade.  Rob Markman of MTV’s “RapFix” fame and Peter Rosenberg of Hot 97 joined that crowd, among many other industry professionals.

SchoolBoy Q NPR Show 2It’s clear that Q is settling to his wild popularity quite easily. Running up on stage to begin the show, he proclaimed that his “set list wasn’t even finished yet”, and that he was “just free-styling shit”. Fans didn’t have much time to complain as he launched into old hits such as “Blessed”, “Hands on the Wheel”, and “Druggy’s with Hoes”, the latter of which had a quick reunion and birthday celebration for fellow TDE-member Ab-Soul. Fans, of course, began clamoring for Kendrick, but as I have said many a time, Q is the type of performer who simply needs no one on his stage. Jumping into the crowd for “Nay Nay”, and electrifying the whole building is proof of that.

Once he finally launched into “Oxymoron’s” all-new material, to which about half the crowd had yet to hear (the leak just came on Friday and the album stream came soon after),  the bass itself became Q’s hype-man. Schoolboy Q would often pause between verses and let the chorus play or even vice-versa. His claim was the desire to make the show half performance and half listening session. On “Studio”, Q announced he would let it play and just let the audience feel the music.  To see Q enjoy his own music on stage as if he became part of the crowd is really quite the sight. If you ever doubted how much he loves what he does, the ‘live’ rendition of “Studio” proved otherwise. Still, on other songs, such as “What They Want” featuring 2 Chainz, Schoolboy Q rapped not only his verse, but 2 Chainz as well. After about 6 other songs which included “The Purge” and “Break The Bank”, Q thanked National Public Radio and the audience, and commanded the crowd to turn up with him one last time as he launched right into “Man of the Year”.

Schoolboy Q’s most endearing quality, however, isn’t his music at all. After the show, Q personally shook hands and took pictures with hundreds of his fans, and look as pleased as ever. TDE as a whole puts a lot into what they do, as visible from Sunday’s performance. The least we can do as Hip Hop fans is put 12 dollars into this bass-heavy tale from LA that is “Oxymoron”.
