It has been reported that Pusha T of The Clipse had to pay a 7 figure pay out to get out of his contract with Def Jam Recordings which is a music label under the Universal Music Group brand aka UMG. This started from the label not wanting Kendrick Lamar on a song The Clipse had prepared for their new album to be released under the Def Jam music label. Pusha T and his rhyme partner and Brother No Malice took a stand against UMG/Def Jam and would not take Kendrick Lamar off the song or drop the song from the album and now we enter into a new era of Hip-Hop where labels can try to dictate who can be on an album and what can or can not be said due to their “influence”.

This could lead to horrible, and negative ramifications in the music culture and this is all tied to Drake it seems and the lawsuit he has against UMG for their support of Kendrick Lamar and the “Not Like Us” song. Drake losing a Rap battle to Kendrick Lamar and then using legal actions to sue UMG has changed how artists’ song lyrics can now be used in legal matters for defamation of character and challenge the core of battle rap culture. With The Clipse not taking the “threat” of a dead project and stalled career we have seen potentially a new era begin in Hip-Hop where the artist can say FUCK the label and use the independent route to find success.

With leaving Def Jam, a formerly highly regarded Hip-Hop label in the culture, and signing with Roc Nation for distribution- and having the ability to do an independent release- gives The Clipse the ability to make a great amount of money from this project. Drake, UMG, and Kendrick Lamar are the names that will make this album move with a younger crowd. Also coupled with The Clipse star power as a group, No Malice’s spiritual journey being documented, and Pusha T’s run with G.O.O.D. Music this album can be the beginning of a power shift for known artists to make money and noise in the culture again.

New artists may not be able to do this, without having a name in the culture but for the known artists like Method Man, Redman, Xzibit etc. the labels may not be able to hold artists and their career at ransom anymore. With having the ability to use their names and credibility to create a buzz and niche out their fan base, we may see the greats return and not have the label telling them when to release, what to release and now who is able to be on their projects in the future.

Salute to The Clipse for not allowing the industry to fail them and destroy their work. Hip-Hop was always counterculture and anti culture. With Hip-Hop becoming THE CULTURE, in the world of entertainment, it is good to see the core of the culture of being rebellious and showing the world your power still exists.

Are you looking forward to The Clipse’s new album and music? With this new victory being won by them I look forward to supporting them and showing the industry Hip-Hop is not to be controlled. It is to be valued and able to grow representing God’s people. God’s people is his Heritage, and his Heritage is Hip-Hop.

The music industry is dying slowly and the world knows it. Music has always been valuable when it comes to cultural identity and as a timepiece to remember the good times when reflecting on one’s life journey. Music has also become an industry where people have given their lives to entertain others by using their creative genius to write, produce sounds and express words to the delight of others in hopes of getting a career out of their love of music. With today’s world becoming so technological, people have more of a chance now to share their hopes and dreams to contribute to the musical landscape/industry. But is that now making the value of music decline and creating the era of the starving artist more apparent than any time before?

Technology and music has been at war for a long time. If you are old enough to remember MP3.com, Limewire, Napster, and the upload revolution during the late 90’s and early 2000’s then you were the first to see people being able to share and upload their music. Of course the music industry and business interest saw this and the music upload and sharing community took its’ pirating methods to the boardroom and streaming platforms eventually came to exist with the scope of having any music you want to listen to accessible with a portable device that eventually became the commonly used cell phone. Music is now available at the click of a screen from many artists of any decade and to the consumer this is a dream. To the artist though this reality has become more and more of a problem and we see the decline of appreciation of music in real time as society moves into its next technological turn. But what has streaming done to hurt artists? Let’s look at what has happened to the money and industry of music with the boom of streaming.

The music industry has made people wealthy for generations. People that run the industry are rich beyond words and the artists we believe and have been proven wrong have made money as well. A lot of people have gone into the artist lifestyle wanting to live the wealthy life and while today’s social media habits and influences have lied to the public of how accessible this is we have seen the music industry take a lot of losses when it comes to money and payouts. The first issue is the value of the song and album.

As of 2025 the figures of payouts to artists today are criminal. The stream is valued at fractions of a penny and the calculations are projected (allegedly) by a royalty calculation payout scale. Here’s a general overview of estimated per-stream payouts for artists on major platforms, as of early 2025:

The crime in this is how much does an artist have to stream to earn a livable wage when it comes to putting music out on streaming services. What influences the payouts and are there block in the streaming money when it is paid out? This is what influences the payouts to artists and dictates if they can be paid a livable wage:

With these guidelines in place we have seen music consumed to the point where the owners of the streaming platforms are making collectively over $20 Billion and the artists mainstream and independent are just taking home pennies for their work. Known artists from the mainstream music label era have had to renegotiate contracts to include streaming as a part of royalties to get money. Artists like Ryan Leslie have taken their music totally off of streaming platforms due to lack of pay. Others like Snoop Dogg and Redman have threatened to take their music off of these platforms because they are not seeing any money from this new music norm. In New Jersey as of 2025 the livable wage to live as a single adult annually is $54,503. As an independent artist one would have to 13,625,750 streams per year, or 37,331 streams per day for a livable wage. If earning money is hard for Nas, Jay-Z, and well known artists, then what is the struggle like for the up and coming artist like?

With music so easy to be consumed by the touch of a button and the access to these streaming services with music able to be uploaded by anyone with the right opportunity the music industry has been over-saturated with music. Music is released of good and bad quality and as such music releases are not cherished anymore as music can be released at any time and at any day. The era of listening to an entire body of work/album has disappeared for the catchy new song that people feel in the moment of their days. People once clamored for the new album to sit, listen and appreciate while now more so music is consumed on the go and as people are constantly moving the attention span has shortened. People and society as a whole does not value music as an art any more. Today in our microwave society music is easy to consume and put out so it is not valued as an art anymore just as a modern life commodity easily to be exploited and experienced at any time.

Will the industry come back? That is dependent on the artists and their plans to succeed. A lot of people call themselves artists but many are mostly hobbyists that make music because they can. Some are people that want to be special where they are from and have no desire to become huge stars. Today people chase the bag (dumb) and do not have the work ethic to move their music and sound to the next level. Without value put into their creation or art form, then the industry will continue to decline and the starving artist will be the norm and standard. An industry outsider once said,

“New artists are not valuable unless they die and death helps them recoup on their budget. Older music has more value because of nostalgia.”

If this is true you, new artists that make music, have no value in this new music industry and as the world moves toward an AI future may no longer exist. Wu-Tang Clan sold an album for $1 million and Mach Hommy sold a vinyl for his album The G.A.T for $5 thousand a copy. What can be done to make your music valuable and are you willing to do what it takes to be the next artist to change the world and make a living creating the art you love in a dying industry?

The gaming landscape is undergoing an exciting transformation. Once criticized for its lack of diversity, video games are now featuring Black characters as dynamic heroes. This change is not just significant for the gaming industry; it carries vast implications for Hip-Hop culture and the young video gamers who look to these characters for inspiration.

My Personal Reflection As a Young Gamer

My earliest video game memories come from lines on a screen. Then the lines turned into Pac-Man eating glowing power balls on a screen and evolved to characters from people’s creative minds that represented heroes of differing worlds and stories but there was always something missing: me. To see a person from my culture in a video game I mostly saw black people in sports games, and in funny characterizations that looked nothing like me. As I have matured in age from a child to now being in my 40’s I can say I am happy to see the children today that play games are experiencing a time where people like us are accessible when picking up a controller to play video games.

The Shift in Representation

Historically, video games have often missed the mark on representation. Characters were often one-dimensional, neglecting many cultures and backgrounds. Yet, the calls for diverse narratives have led to noteworthy changes. Characters like Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the heroes in Tales of Kenzera: Zau and South of Mississippi have opened the lens and minds of people to see, accept and spend money on characters that look like they are a part of the greater diverse society all gamers share.

This uptick in representation means that children from different backgrounds can finally see themselves as protagonists, embarking on epic journeys. For instance, a survey from the International Game Developers Association found that 83% of players value diversity in video games, proving that diverse representation is not just desired but essential.

Impact on Hip-Hop Culture

Hip-hop culture has long influenced the lives of millions, and the integration of Black heroes in gaming enhances this relationship. Well-known artists, from Nas to Wu-Tang Clan often reference gaming in their lyrics, reflecting the crossover between these two vibrant cultures.

For example, in a track by Travis Scott, he mentions exploring virtual worlds, drawing parallels between gaming adventures and life challenges. This unique fusion resonates strongly with young players, reminding them that creativity and authenticity are key elements of both gaming and Hip-Hop.

As a younger gamer the first game I remember that had rappers and Hip-Hop artists in it was Rap Jam Volume 1 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). We only received pictures of rappers on substandard graphics in a basketball game but nothing that stood out. There are many games and many memories to share but when Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight for NY came out Hip-Hop went to another level in representation on video games. I was able to not only hear the songs I loved to listen to but I was able to play as the artists in the game as well.

The game Marc Echo’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure was the first game I played with a full story that gave me a protagonist that represent Hip-Hop not only with Talib Kweli’s voice but using graffiti and street art to convey a message and to fight against the establishment/villain in a game about getting the truth and fighting back through messaging. It was always easy to hear Hip-Hop music in sports games but our faces were still missing in original stories where we were the focus and not a skin out on a one dimensional non personable character.

Empowering Young Gamers

Young gamers gain more than just entertainment from engaging with dynamic characters. They encounter narratives that celebrate victory against odds and stories of perseverance. When children see relatable heroes overcoming challenges, it inspires confidence and encourages them to embrace their identities.

In comic books Miles Morales in the Spider-Man stories has become a popular character that has gone from comic book pages to video gaming. Black Panther was a blockbuster hit that Marvel and Disney dropped the ball on with lack of marketing for fans of the character and the growth of interest in the character due to the movie. Now we see children able to choose The King of Wakanda in games like Marvel: The Avengers, Marvel Rivals and Black Panther has 2 upcoming games to be released on the current generation of video game consoles.

Consider games like NBA 2K, Rise of The Ronin, and WWE2K25 where players can create avatars representing their own backgrounds. This feature promotes self-expression, showing boys and girls that they can be heroes in their journeys. In fact, studies indicate that children who identify with game characters show increased self-esteem and are more likely to engage in positive social interactions.

The Role of Communities

Gaming thrives on community engagement. Conversations about representation gain traction in online forums, gaming conventions, and social media, emphasizing the importance of diverse narratives.

Developers are now more receptive to feedback from players regarding the types of characters they wish to see. Companies like Naughty Dog actively involve their community in discussions about LGBTQ+ and racial representation, showing a commitment to authenticity. This ongoing dialogue empowers Black characters to have more significant roles in gaming, ensuring that new releases resonate deeply with a broader audience.

Bridging Real-Life Challenges

Games have a unique ability to highlight real-world issues through their stories. Titles featuring Black characters often address themes such as systemic challenges, personal identity, and cultural pride. For instance, Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry tackles slavery and freedom, providing players a chance to engage with heavy, yet vital topics.

Today’s world is dealing with a new type of censorship with DEI and the deleting of real American history with books being taken out of libraries and the social conscious of our society. Video gaming now has the opportunity to tell stories and include history in it to ensure not only that our children, and gamers are entertained but the representation in gaming can ensure those stories and perspectives are not taken away from the experiences of the stories that can be told in world building and helping the gamer deal with real life exploration of feelings and understanding as well.

The Role of Game Development

The emergence of Black heroes didn’t happen by accident. Game developers have become increasingly aware and socially conscious. They understand the significance of representing diverse narratives in a changing demographic landscape.

Successful collaborations between developers and influential figures in hip-hop have empowered projects that elevate Black voices. For example, the partnership between 2K Sports and hip-hop artists helps create immersive soundtracks that resonate with fans, enriching the gaming atmosphere and creating a more authentic gaming experience.

The Implication for Future Generations

As gaming continues to grow, the importance of representation will extend into the future. Children who see Black heroes today are motivated to pursue their dreams beyond the screen—in art, music, storytelling, and other fields.

These heroes ignite the imaginations of youth, pushing them to craft their own narratives and chase their passions. They serve as real-world role models, demonstrating that breaking barriers is possible, not just in gaming but in all aspects of life.

The Verdict

The rise of Black characters as heroes in video games signals a significant shift in representation and storytelling. This evolution enriches gaming culture and positively influences hip-hop and young audiences. As the lines between these two powerful cultures continue to blur, we can look forward to a future filled with diverse stories, empowered individuals, and collaborative creativity.
