Varn Curtis is back, and he wants ALL the Smoke!!

Already on his second project of 2021, Varn continues to revolutionize ‘loud pack rap’ with the release of his latest musical offering, the “Roll Another One” EP.

This time the Queens-bred emcee has linked up with famed lo-fi producer OS Arcade to cook-up 5 tracks of brand new heat to feed the streets, just in time for 4/20.

From the simplistic anthem “DopeMan”, where Varn deems himself the ‘Dime Bag Don’, to the DMX-flavored “F*cked’em All”– an ode to his female ‘achievements’- the Southside Queens artist once again delivers with kush-infused rhymes laced with the sour diesel instrumentals, providing one helluva high!

Building off the momentum of the new project, his current single “So High” (produced by Todee) has been burning up the streets and local smoke sessions  as well with it’s infectious beat and melody.

This weeks “Hot Chick of the Month” in New Jersey’s own Jessica Marti. The Dominican and Puerto Rican bomshell is a multi-talented female who wears many hats (literally…lol); she is a successful make-up artist, blogger, and motivational speaker, among other things.

Recently ya boy Tommy Gunz sat down with the super-sexy, super-talented Jessica Marti at a Starbucks-near-you, where we talked about everything: Make-up, Hats, Turn-On’s, and “beating-up faces”. Check out the interview below.

Q: Well first things first, Jessica your definitely hot. What’s your nationality?

A: Why thank you (smiles). Well I was born in the US, but I am 100% Caribbean; Dominican and Puerto Rican.

Tommy Gunz: That’s a dope mix right there.

Jessica: Yes it is !!!! 

Q: So your makeup company is buzzin’ on the streets right now. How did you get into the makeup game?

A: It sure is, I feel pretty blessed right now. I got my start in the game, “as cliché” as it may sound, as a little girl in her momma’s make-up kit! (laughs). I used to look at Janet Jackson album covers, set everything out in front of me, grab that makeup and get to work. I would replicate it exactly. As I got older I started contacting people doing free work for shoots, videos, fashion shows, etc. Eventually I finally ended up working the BET Rip the Runway fashion-show and for one of the mavens of the industry, M.A.C. Cosmetics.

Q: I’m a dude so I don’t understand anything about makeup (laughs). Can you describe what a professional makeup artist does?

A: A professional makeup artist doesn’t change a face, she plays up on the individuals best features. She’s an artist, she works with lighting, contouring and making this person shine. The face is the artists canvas literally and when the client looks in the mirror she shouldn’t say “Wow, I look so different”; she should say, “Wow, I look like I got my face beat!!!”. That means she’s looking DOPE by the way (laughs).

Tommy Gunz: Oh ok, I was about to say (laughs). That’s the “make-up” slang, huh?

Jessica: Yup (fist pumps)

Q: You have a very inspirational blog(WatchMeBlush.tumblr.com) that has a huge following on the web, tell us more about it?

A: The site is on tumblr, and it’s called Watch Me Blush. I update it consistently; it’s by a woman, for women. It’s where women can go to get pop cultivated and motivated. On there you can find anything new and happening in the fashion industry, music industry, art etc. It’s a place where you can keep up-to-date on our ever changing culture. I also love to empower women, it’s my passion.  Women sometimes look to increase self-esteem by focusing on their outer appearance; however I believe we need to strengthen our core. We need to do it everyday like showering; we have to shower everyday or else …right? (smiles)

Tommy Gunz: Yes we do!! (laughs)

Q: Okay, so what’s Your Sign?

A: I’m a crab, cancer baby!!!

Q: So what are some of your “Turn-On’s” regarding the opposite sex?

A: Turn-on’s, let me see (smiling). Definitely confidence, humor, and swag. A guy has to be able to hold a conversation, I like smart guys; he must like adventure and trying new things, and a guy should always have a thirst for life! That’s what I like.

Q: Ok, so what are some of your “Turn-Off’s?

A: Hmmmm, definitely insecure dudes, arrogance, selfishness, and a guy that a conservative square (laughs).

Q: I hear that. So back to the “beauty”, what female celeb’s “makeup game” is on point in your opinion?

A: Hmmmmm. To name just one is not fair, there are a few and credit has to be given to their artists. Jennifer Lopez for one, she is always “on trend” and her look is wearable for the mass public. Then there is Nicki (Minaj), she’s more to “the left” but on a more artistic level she’s “on trend” as well. The Kardashians’ own the “smokey- eye” look, but it’s not an “everyday look” like they wear is. Other ladies who are on point, definitely Zoe Saldana and Blake Lively.

Q: That’s what’s up! So not only are you a true female hustla, you’re also smokin’ hot Jess. The fellaz across the world want to know, Single or Taken? 

A: (smiles) Well Gunz, I am currently taken! It’s a crazy dating world out there, it’s a jungle out there literally (laughs)

Q: Damn, somebody beat us to it. (laughs). That’s good to hear though. Do you find it hard to be in a relationship in your line of work?

A: Honestly if your true to who you are, not at all. I’m comfortable in my skin so, and I can separate my personal and business life.

Q: Speaking of dating, what the worst first date you ever been on?

A: (laughs, covers eyes.) OMG !!! Well, I love shrimp, and one time I got taken to a seafood type of restaurant. Don’t ask me how or why, but out of nowhere I developed an allergic reaction to shrimp, and I ended up looking like “Hitch” after an hour (laughing hysterically). Yup, that had to have been the worst first date ever.

Tommy Gunz: Wow, just like “Hitch”??

Jessica: (laughing) OMG, Yesss!!! Just like “Hitch”.

Q: So what advice do you have to aspiring Make-up Artists trying to get in the game?

 A: Well, if you have a natural ability, school is not needed. Focus on your talents, study faces, study shadows and lighting. Learn different textures and learn color theories.  Art is a major part of it, so learn what colors work together and what colors compliment each other. Inspiration is all around you, keep your eyes and ears open.

Q: So in the makeup game, what is the hottest trend right now?

A: Let me see. For this Fall: Eyes were a focal point as burnished gold reigned for lids, liner took an exaggerated turn and brows got their arch back. Hair-stylists played with the chignon and sculpted frizzy beehives; feather hair accessories received a couture twist and short pixie-cuts provided boyish contrast to all the extravagance and creativity that is couture.

Tommy Gunz: Wow, I consider myself a smart dude, but I have no idea what you just said (laughing hysterically)

Jessica: (laughs) That’s because you’re a guy. 

Q: Ok, so music-wise, who are you feeling right now? You a hip-hop fan?

A: Yes I am. I get inspired by hip-hop. I’m diggin’ Drake, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Nicki (Minaj), Chris Brown, Adele, among others.

Q: That’s dope. So is there a lot of money in the makeup game?

A: There is a lot of money to be made, if you are willing to go out there and get it; competition is thick.

Q: Of course. So what’s the best part about your job?

A: (smiles) Watching my clients be happy. “Beating a face up” and watching my girl get a boost of confidence, like “yea gurllll, I’m the ish right now” (laughs). And then taking the opportunity to tell them that the only thing that matters is how you see yourself, how the world will see you, how you see yourself, so you are always the ish. That confidence resonates a magnificent energy.

Q: What’s the worst part about your job?

A: You are truly an entrepreneur and gotta hustle for yours.  You got to be willing to travel everywhere and you have to be willing to take constructive criticism. Not everyone is going to love your work so you have to be humble.

Q: So are you a Party-chick or a Homebody?

A: I use to be a crazy party-head…Thursday through Sunday.  (laughs). These days I’m a homebody…I love to go out, and the whole social scene, but it has to be an event worth going to.

Q: So what makes Jessica feel extra-sexy??

A: Ahhh, let me see. Fresh hair, fresh nails, fresh gear…and for the real stuff it’s the gym and a strong sense of self.

Q: Ok, that a good answer. So what fashion accessory Can’t you live without?

A: Haha!!! (laughs) I Definitely have to say hats. I love hats.

Tommy Gunz: Me too!!!!!!!! (laughing)

Q: So being a fashionable check, what’s NOT a good look for the ladies in 2011?

A: Hmmmm, let me see, I can’t get into those parachute pants…does nothing for me or anyone else. For me fashion is funny, do what works for you and do it well….a trend comes and goes, personality stays.

Q: Ok, so who is your celebrity Crush?

A: Wow (giggles). Celebrity crush….that’s a good one. Ummmmm…Johnny Depp, Ashton Kutcher, Gerard Butler…not so much crushes, but I find strong, confident men attractive.

Q: You take great pics and you are definitely hot. would you ever consider doing some Modeling?

A: I am open to it. I usually do behind the camera activities, but I had a photo-shoot recently and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.  I definitely would love to express my creatively in that form as well.

Q: So what are your other goals for the future?

A: My Goals for the future in a society where things move and change so rapidly is hard to grasp. I take all opportunities because you never know where a road is going to take you…I will definitely still be in this industry. Right now I speak to women and self awareness to develop a strong sense of self, because that’s sexy. I am an artist, a writer, and pop culture cultivator. Hustla…

This month’s “Hustla of the Month” is Graphic Artist Ebony S. Junior. A native of the BX, the lovely Ms. Ebony is one of the hottest on-the-come-up Artists & Graphic Designers in the game right now! Over the last couple of years her dope cartoons and character-designs have been in high demand, both among ‘industry’ and ‘regular’ customers alike. Ya boy Tommy Gunz recently got a chance to sit down with Ebony, where we talked about everything: Art, Music, Computer Programs, and the ‘rough life’ of being a good-looking female in the game. Q: So you’ve been doing your thing with the character designs. Tell us how long have you been doing art design for? When and How did you start your business?

A: I have been designing for over 8 years. I started learning graphic design in high school and continued to develop my skill once I went on to college. When I was 18 I started getting my clients. Originally I never charged for my services, but when I started noticing the surprised expressions on my clients face when I said, “it’s actually free!” I realized it was time to charge. As a result 2 months into doing Freelancing I purchased my domain name Ebonysjunior.com and officially started my business as Ebony S. Junior the Graphic Designer.

Q: Where are you from??

A: Personally I enjoy this question because no matter what I say you’ll believe me. I always make up some crazy background for myself just to see how people will react, but I’m simply Puerto Rican and Black, born in the Bronx.

Q: Did you naturally know how to draw, or was it something you learned over time?

A: I started learning how to draw when I was 7 years old. I am a very visual person; I’ve always had a weak spot for vivid colors and details. I learned from practicing on my own.

Q: Did you go to school for art?

A: The school I went to was Graphic Communication Arts High School it was a school for Computer art/ Graphic Design.

Q: How long does it take you to finish a design?

A: It really depends on the project but it can take anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours.

Q: How has technology helped your craft?

A: In the beginning I was completely against the technology and art combo, but as I became older I realized that technology is what feeds this field and I really had no choice, but to get into it. I started doing computer art and using social networks to promote myself.

Q: Are there any challenges to being a good looking female AND a businesswoman? Do dudes ever try to mix ‘business with pleasure’ or try to ‘get over’ on you??

A: Hmmm. (laughs). Being a good looking female in this business does have its challenges, but more positive ones than negatives. I always have the men who are surprised that I am a designer and they actually don’t contact me originally for my design services. This is where the positives come in because men add me because of my pretty face, as a result they look through my social network photos, there that’s where they find my design work and that’s how I get my clients. I have men paying for projects just so that they can have some kind of conversation. I don’t mix business with pleasure, it’s a waste of my time, but I do have individuals who try (winks).

Q: What program do you use in your design process?

A: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. And sometimes Indesign.

Q: Where do you find your inspiration to draw?

A: I find the inspiration to draw through the reactions I receive from my client. I enjoy making others happy. Satisfied clients keep me inspired and motivated.

Q: Do you remember the first thing you drew?

A: I drew the little white-kid on the play-doh container. That was around 1995 though, so I doubt you guys remember that (laughs).

Q: Is there a lot of money in the art game?

A: Definitely! I control the amount I make. It’s all about how good you are.

Q: What is your Advice to other people trying to get into the Art Design Industry?

A: If you are young start now. Start now while your responsibilities are still low and your time is unlimited. By the time you’re at your best and it’s time to make real decisions you’ll have a built client base and the ability to live where ever you want as long as you have a laptop and the right Graphic Design Programs to do what you have to do.

Q: So let’s talk music. Who are some of your favorite artists?

A: Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kanye, Tyga, Miguel, Meek Mill, 2 chainz, Rick Ross, Ryan Leslie; these are the people at the top of my list right now.

Q: What Album is currently in your CD Player/ iPod?

A: 2 Chaaaaaaiinz !!! (laughs).“Based on a T.R.U Story”

Q: So what’s the Best Part of your Job?

A: Always being busy

Q: What’s the Worst Part of the Job?

A: Always being busy. (Laughs). But personally I enjoy it, but my friends and family hate that I never have time to play.

Q: So what’s next for you?

A: Not sure yet, but hopefully the acknowledgment I received on Fox 5 News is a sign that it can only get better.

Q: What artists have inspired your style?

A: I would have to say Amber Rose, I love her attitude and style.

Q: Are you into sports? Football?

A: I actually get asked this question a lot due to my height, I actually hate sports, but I am a good pretender so if I ever had to watch it with a group of guys, its cools I got this.

Q: Hey sometimes you gotta ‘pretend’ (Laughs). So who would you love to draw, if you could pick anybody?

A: Kanye West.

Q: What were some of your favorite projects you worked on?

A: I can’t name any favorites as of now, I’ve had over 800 clients so it’s really hard to choose.

Q: Who’s your favorite artist?

A: Drake, His work and drive is very inspirational.

Q: Do you have any other talents other than art?

A: I also teach at different NYC High Schools.

So with that being said, check out our exclusive interview with our GoodFellaz TV “Next Up Artist”, New Jersey Rapper/Producer Tony Green. The Garden State MC has been making a lot of noise throughout the Tri-State area with his witty punch-lines, metaphors, wordplay and rapid delivery. Raised in a small town, Tony Green’s music gives rap fans a very different perspective of life in ‘Dirty Jerz’; he gives a vivid depiction of his life and experiences with the drug culture, crime, and family struggles, racism and much more.

His critically acclaimed last album “The Tony Green Files” covers many of these topics; indeed he brings a refreshing alternative to the often content-lacking music currently saturating the airwaves. Recently GoodFellaz TV’s own Tommy Gunz got a chance to sit-down with Tony Green, where we ‘chopped-it-up’ about everything: Hip Hop in 2012, the BEST rap album of all time, liquor, Major Labels vs. Independents and more. Check out the interview below.

Q: So where are you from?

A: I’m from a small town in New Jersey called Glen Rock , that’s in Bergen County.

Q: Shoutout to Jersey!! How long have you been doing music for?? How old were you when you spit your first rhyme?

A: Hmmm let me see…I wrote my first rhyme in ’95 and started  spittin’ around that same year .

Q: Niiice! How would you describe your style of music ??

A:  My style’s a mix of a few styles. What I want people to see me as is a ‘conscious rapper’, someone that’ll speak out on topics other people won’t speak on. But I’m heavy into the ‘battle rap’ style of spittin’, Old School and Party/Dance music. Making songs that can make people dance is a thrill for me.

Q: Your last project got a lot of buzz. Tell us about your new music. What can the fans expect from your new project?

A: My Next Album “The Tony Green Files: Each Word is A Step” is gonna be the best music I’ve done. Every song has a style of it’s own and there’s a lot of stories and fire bars and metaphors. It’s an album with no filler; everything in there has meaning and is true to what I believe Hip Hop should be. Mad original beats on this album all with a lot of feeling.

Q: That sounds dope! When it comes to making music, do you freestyle or write??

A: On albums I always write, but I can write verses in my head without writing them down. Doing that makes the flow fit the beat better if you hear the beat and write it in your head on the spot.

Q: That’s what’s up! So who are some of your musical inspirations?

A: As a kid around 10 my Aunt had some friends from Uptown that were into Black Moon and Dre. Then I started to get into rap more . Raekwon’s “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” album really made me want to rap. The beats were so crazy from RZA, and the way the whole crew was rhyming on there was so intellectual and creative, I just got the idea I should rap too. The first beat I recorded over was “Glaciers of Ice” by Raekwon.

Q: Being a true ‘hip-hop head’, what do you think about the state of hip-hop in 2012?

A: In the Underground it’s just as amazing and inspiring as it was in the days I started getting into Hip Hop. The mainstream radio and TV channels seem to push the music that’s deep aside, in favor of songs about the same few topics; Drugs, Money, Jewelry and being in the Club. We need to return to Hip Hop that’s about lyrical skill, originality and meaning. What’s being pushed these days is too stale and a lot of it sounds the same.

Q:  In your opinion, who’s the best new hip-hop artist to come out in the last couple of years ?

A: One of my favorite artists to emerge is Reks. I think he’s got one of the best flows and he always makes tracks that have substance. And in the battle rap scene there’s so many sick emcees I can’t name them all here, but my favorite probably would be Dizaster.

Q: If you weren’t making music, what do you think you would be doing ??

A: I’d love to be a Philosophy teacher or one of them Mad Scientist /Mathematicians (laughs) .

Q: What is you process when it comes to making a record??

A: I write all the time so it’s usually about finding the right beats. Then it’s editing the lyrics to fit the beat, and seeing what I can add; seeing what effects I can add on the track, what vocals from a singer can go in. I think when you already have lyrics on deck, it’s about the beats and seeing how they flow from one to the next.

Q: Who’s in your CD Player/ iPod right now??

A: I got my 3 Wu Tang mixes and my Nas mix on deck.

Q: Have you ever had sex while your music was playing in the background?

A: Hell yeah !!! (laughing)

Q: What do you hate about the music business??

A: Too much business, not enough music. These days the people controlling the labels are too concerned about facts and figures instead of what the music sounds like. Too much commercialism.

Q: Has the internet hurt or helped hip-hop??

A: It’s more of a help because we all can find dope music if we look for it. Back in the day we had to depend on radio and TV. There are some down sides to the Internet when it comes to music, but I think the good outweighs the bad.

Q: If you could work with anybody in the game, who would it be??

A: Off top I’d say Nas. He’s my favorite emcee.

Q: if you could have any chick to be the ‘main chick’ in your video, who would it be??

A: Megan Fox.

Q: Good answer! So what made you start rapping?

A: I wrote poetry as a kid, a lot of it was about social and political issues, even at that age. I always felt like I needed to express myself, and rap is one of the best ways to do it. You get 3 verses that can be 16 bars or more. No other genre really lets you have more room to speak your mind.

Q: Production-wise, what type of beats do you look for when it comes to making music?

A: I just want something fire. It can be Dance Style, Hard, Old School, Fly , with or without samples. But It’s gotta be real hot or just real original.

Q: What producers would you like to work with in the future if you had a chance?

A: RZA, Timbaland, Drumma Boi, Alchemist, Premier, Dre, Kanye, Swizz, Statik Selektah, Mannie Fresh.

Q: Would you rather sign with a major label or go the independent route ??

A:  It depends on how much creative control I can get. If the Major labels trust that what I’m gonna make will sell, with the right promotion plan and budget, then I know I could be the next 50, Em , Jay , Wayne; one of those multi-million sellers. But if the Indies are the only labels willing to let me make the music I believe in, then that’s the way it will be.

Q: In your opinion the best hip-hop album of all time is _______ ??

A: That’s a really hard question to answer, but just based on the lyrics I would have to say “It Was Written” by Nas.

Q: That’s a good choice. So in your opinionthe dopest producer of all time would be __________ ??

A: The RZA is my favorite. But Timbaland and Manny Fresh are just as creative and used almost no samples. RZA’s gritty sound is probably my favorite style though.

Q: So switching topics for a minute, what’s your drink of choice?

A: Jamison and Coke of course!

Q: Haha, I can dig it! So what’s next for you?? What upcoming projects are you working on??

A: Right now I’m working on the album and spreading the new music all over via the Internet. Also I’ll be organizing more shows in Jersey and out of town . I’m working with RhymeCalisthenics on some gigs in Baltimore, Toronto, and we’ve spoken to a few interested parties in The UK. My “In The Loop Entertainment” company is also organizing some shows with Wu-Tang affiliates Fes Taylor and Judah Priest.

Q: One thing you can’t live without would be _____ ??

A: Music!!

Q: So what advice would you give to any aspiring artist’s trying to get in the game?

A: People always say “Be true to yourself, be persistent, never quit”, and the more I do, the more I realize how right they are. If I can give one bit of my own advice it’s this: if you fall it doesn’t matter, it’s all about how you bounce back up again.
