Recently the good folks at GoodFellaz TV were invited to the listening session in NYC for Fabolous’s “The Soul Tape”, the veteran rapper’s newest mixtape.

“The Soul Tape” seems to be only the beginning of what seems to be a more conscious version of Loso, as the rumors circulating about the new super-group of Fabolous, Ne-Yo, and Ryan Leslie were confirmed. However, the best insight into the project is “You Be Killin Em Part 2”, as the group will begin work after the release of Loso’s next album. Will Fabolous go the route of other attempted Rapper/R&B Collaborations? (Lovers and Friends, anyone?)

From the moment the first track “Pain” drops, you realize this is not Sucker Free Sunday nor 106 & Park. Indeed the vibe of non-commercialism is precisely what makes this next mixtape a classic. The lyrics, melodies, and even the beats set the mood for you to head nod, smoke a blunt, and just listen. Fab’s more familiar self rings out on tracks such as “Mo Brooklyn, Mo Harlem, Mo Southside” and is joined by an all star cast of Vado, Lloyd Banks, and Lil’ Wayne on “That’s Not Love”. Another stand-out track is “Ya’ll Don’t Hear Me Tho” featuring Red Café.

When asked about the particular selections of beats and rappers during the listening session, Fabolous simply replied “I just did what felt right.” The beauty of “The Soul Tape” is that it remains true to Fab’s distinct brand of hip hop, and not to an industry that demands more generic, pop-friendly material.

Rating: 3.5 TV’s out of 5.
