Beyonce Sells Over 1 Million Albums In 1st Week, But Does She Have Beef With Target & Amazon ?!?
– GoodFellaz TV Staff
Not a bad week for Beyonce’. Not only did she sell over 1 Million copies of her newest self-titled album, break iTunes records sales, and take the #1 Spot on the Billboard Charts, but she even managed to get into some ‘beef’ with retail giants Target & Amazon.com;. Now that’s gangsta! lol
That’s right! On December 13th Beyoncé shocked the world; surprising fans, media, and retailers alike when she suddenly dropped her latest LP, which she pre-released exclusively through the Apple’s iTunes store. Featuring 14-tracks & 17-videos, the digital album was priced at $15.99 and ONLY sold as an album; there were no individual singles available for download.
However some retailers, including industry big-dogs Target and Amazon.com, took offense over the exclusive one-week pre-release arrangement she had with competitor Apple. In protest online shopping giant Amazon.com decided not to sell physical copies of her album, and is not promoting (although it will still be selling) the digital download version. Meanwhile Target decided to boycott her new album, which was her fifth solo LP, releasing a statement stating:
While there are many aspects that contribute to our approach and we have appreciated partnering with Beyoncé in the past, we are primarily focused on offering CDs that will be available in a physical format at the same time as all other formats. At this time, Target will not be carrying Beyonce’s new self-titled album ‘Beyonce.’”
So how did she respond to these moves? Well the pop diva decided to go shopping! No really, Beyonce randomly popped-up at a Wal-Mart store in Tewksbury, Mass., pushing a cart and giving out $50 Gift certificates totaling $37,500. The question is, was this really a ‘random’ event or was Beyoncé sending a message to Target and Amazon.com: Refuse to sell my album in your stores and I’ll simply join forces with your competitor Wal Mart. Talk about gangsta!
Beyoncé is able to wield this type of clout, partially because she is one of the biggest artists in the music industry, but also because it is a ‘new day’ in the recording industry; In 2013, sales of physical albums totaled around $13 billion, which is nearly half of what sales used to be even six years prior. On the other end, digital music sales continue to soar to record levels, reaching the $10 billion mark this year.
The power-shift towards digital sales has given enormous influence to iTunes, which is the biggest online music retailer in the game, who is currently ‘snatching-up’ over 41% of the retail music market. Indeed iTunes is trouncing the competition; by comparison Wal-Mart only has a 10% share, followed by Amazon.com with 9%, and Target which only has a 5% slice of the market.
Apparently Mrs. Carter has been taking a page out of ‘hubby’ Jay-Z’s book; earlier this year her husband also decided to shake-up the industry when he released the first 1 million copies of his last album “Magna Carta Holy Grail” for free a week early only via a Samsung app. Reported Hov sold the exclusive first week release rights to smart-phone giant Samsung for an estimated $5 million; not a bad pay-day at all.
So on behalf of the GoodFellaz congratulation to the Queen B herself Beyonce. Check out the video for her new single “Drunk In Love” featuring husband Jay-Z, and check out exclusive pics from her recent video shoot, courtesy of GoodFellaz TV.
