In a blow to the Hip Hop community, legendary rapper Heavy D passed away November 8th after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital.  Born Dwight Arrington Myers, the “Overweight Lover” died at the tragically young age of 44 years. The cause of death has yet to be revealed at this time.

A true hip-hop icon, Heavy D was one of the most popular and influential rappers of the 1990’s. He was the lead-performer of the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, which had numerous hits including “Now That We’ve Found Love”, “We Got Our Own Thang”, and the theme song for the TV show “In Living Color”. Years later he was name-checked by fellow hip-hop legend The Notorious B.I.G. in his hit single “Juicy”.

Heavy D and his group started performing and recording in junior-high, where he made a demo tape that eventually got into the hands of  the legendary Andre Harrell, who was working at Def Jam Records at the time.  Andre Harrel left Def Jam soon after to start his own record company,    the equally-legendary Uptown Records in 1986, and he made Heavy D And The Boyz the first group on his new label.

In recent years, Heavy D focused more on TV and film. He currently has a cameo in the New Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller film, “Tower Heist”. Recently Heavy D performed at the 2011 BET Awards, which was his first live performance in 15 years. Check out some of Heavy D’s classic videos below, courtesy of GoodFellaz TV.
